Saturday, April 15, 2017, Spring Quarter Welcome Party for the Stanford Internship Students

From 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm, we held the Spring Quarter Internship Students’ Welcome Party at the Amherst Guest House in Doshisha University.

From the Stanford Japan Center, 35 people attended, including 32 students, President Mike Hugh (represented for health reasons, by Ms. Sakata and Ms. Shimazawa) and Professor Shelly Collel.

From the Kansai Stanford Club, 36 people attended, including 12 Alumni, their family members other associates. With a total of 83 people, this turned out to be a huge party (see photo).

At the party, we made three groups named Fujisan, Sakura and Ume, before the potluck lunch started. Later, there was a paper airplane flying contest followed by Stanford students’ activities.

The airplane contest was held for the first time, so we were worried whether it would be successful. Fortunately, because of the unique rules, everybody really enjoyed it a lot. The Stanford students gave us performances in juggling, sang a song and gave Power Point presentations about their lives in Japan.

Finally, all sang the “Birthday” (sung by Masashi Sada) from the NHK TV show “Tsurubei no kazoku ni kanpai”. The Stanford students prepared the translation of the lyrics, so we think they could understand the sentiment of this Japanese song.

From this year, we will have an Autumn Welcome Party, so we are looking forward to it.

The following ideas were discussed for the party:

(1) The activities could be done in three groups. (2) Each group could have a leader, Ms. Murata, Ms. Miyake, Mr. Kawata would be available for this. (3) A paper airplane flying contest was proposed as a new activity. (4) Usually, Mr. Ito and his family offer an “origami” paper-folding corner at the event. This year, paper airplane folding will also be offered there. (5) The paper airplane contest could be held as a group competition first followed by an individual competition. (6) Later, a Stanford University professor will be asked to give a ten-minute introduction of the campus. (7) At the end of the party, everybody sings a song together.

2. Others

(1) The chairman informed everyone that Mr. Hugh from the Stanford Japan Center would be absent at the party due to health reasons. (2) It was confirmed that the Autumn Welcome Party will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017, so we have to start preparing for it.
