Saturday, April 16, 2016, Spring Quarter Welcome Party for the Stanford Internship Students
From 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm, we held the Spring Quarter Internship Student’s welcome party at the Amherst Guest House
in Doshisha University.
From the Stanford Japan Center, 35 students, President Mike Hugh, 2 faculty members and 4 of their family members attended.
So, with a total of around 80 people, this turned out to be a huge party (see photo).
At the party, we made four groups before the potluck lunch started.
Later, we gathered for self-introductions.
The following question and answer session was this time also translated into Japanese, so everybody could understand and be a part of the activities,
which worked very successfully.
Finally, all sang the song of encouragement for the area affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake “Hana wa saku”
- (“Flowers will bloom again”) together.

Sunday, February 14, 2016, Winter Quarter Welcome Party for the Stanford Internship Students
A total of 18 people participated: 8 Stanford Students and 2 Japanese Students, President Mike, 5 Alumni Members
and 2 of their family members.
For the first time, we held the winter quarter party at the Kyoto YWCA in form of a potluck party.
After the potluck, we set a theme for small talk.
This time we wanted to know what the students found surprising when they come to Japan.
The answers include surprise at the difference of public and private behavior of the Japanese people,
the fact that Japanese food was so delicious that the student ate too much, wondering how to use a Japanese-style toilet,
and how noisy the crickets were in autumn.
At the end of the party, we all sang the AKB48 hit “The 365-day Paper Plane” together.
